Right now only Mrs. Palin can hurt Mrs. Palin. Messrs. Obama and Biden can't do it and shouldn't try. And the media can't, because more than half the country won't listen to them on this subject now, and for a while. The media could get videotape of Mrs. Palin saying, "We should invade Mars and it will be easy because Mars is hidden inside my hair!" and people would say, "Stop sliming Sarah!" - Peggy Noonan

I stand by my earlier assessment that no one knows what's going on. Sure, partisans from each party usually live in their own mutually exclusive fantasy worlds. Take Andrew Sullivan, who is calling Palin a pathological liar in between complaints about her not speaking to the press. Question: How can she lie without talking? Is she IMing the NYT? OMG, fyi that wd b k-rad.

Even so, the consensus just doesn't exist. It could be that this sense of bewilderment is a precursor to enlightenment. The world sheds its preconceptions and attains true knowledge. Or is it only this self perceiving the world? Let's say a prayer for my ingenuous absolutism.

Personally, I think the next move should be for one of the candidates to find an issue where he has majority support and make a brief issue campaign out of it. Maybe the whole financial industry mess, although neither candidate knows enough about it that I'd want them to try to fix it. Frankly, an economy less robust than ours would be collapsing by this point. It might even flourish if the pols stop kicking it.

Maybe socialised health care, or which country we should invade next. Obama says Pakistan. (We're fighting a limited war there. Viva realpolitik.) McCain might go for NoKo. Apparently, the public thinks we gave peace a chance, and it was boring.
